Michael Polk Built a Billion-Dollar Career on Grit and Education

The story of Michael Polk is one of earned opportunity. Born to parents who had recently arrived in the United States, Polk grew up understanding the weight of hard work. That upbringing shaped both his character and his ambitions, and it set the stage for a career that would eventually span some of the largest consumer goods companies in the world.

Polk’s academic interests pulled him toward math and science, and he channeled that passion into an engineering degree at Cornell University. Studying Operations Research and Industrial Engineering, he graduated in 1982 and accepted his first job at Procter & Gamble, where he supervised a papermaking machine at a mill in Northeast Pennsylvania. The role was physically demanding and unconventional for a Cornell engineer, but Polk later credited it as one of the most formative experiences of his professional life, teaching him the value of interdependence and the importance of respecting every role in a business system.

After three years at P&G, Polk returned to academia and earned his MBA from Harvard Business School. That degree, he acknowledged, opened new doors and accelerated his path into marketing and general management. From there, his career took him to Kraft Foods, then Unilever, and eventually to Newell Rubbermaid, where he served as President and CEO from 2011 to 2019.

From Paper Mill to the Corner Office

Under Michael Polk Newell Brands leadership, Newell grew from a company with $5.4 billion in net sales to one generating $9.4 billion, representing a compound annual growth rate of over 7% across eight years. His team completed 35 transactions, split nearly equally between acquisitions and divestitures, transforming the business from a holding company into a global consumer goods operator.

Michael Polk retired from Newell Brands in 2019 but returned to the business world in early 2020 as CEO of Implus LLC, a portfolio company of Berkshire Partners, where he has applied a comprehensive turnaround strategy. Today, he also serves as an advisory director at Berkshire Partners. His career, built from the ground up, reflects the kind of disciplined ambition his family modeled from the start.
