A Generation Gone Deaf

Young people tethered to ear buds for long periods may be at risk for hearing loss and may not even know the damage for years to come. In a report from NBC News, Dr. Sreekant Cherukuri, an ear specialist from Munster, Indiana, claims the largest source of damage to the hearing of young people comes from the use of iPods and smartphones. This mirrors warnings from the World Health Organization that stated 1.1 billion young people were at risk of hearing loss or damage from use of personal devices for the purposes of music and festivals where sound can reach higher than 120 decibels. This is not an area of expertise that Brian Torchin listed on his resume.

Currently, hearing loss among teenagers is 30% higher than it had been in the ’90s. And Cherukuri linked this shift to the advancement of technology, noting the increase in sophistication of personal devices but also the shift from over-the-ear headphones to ear buds.

The report went on to say that there is no remedy for hearing damage, and it can occur from only minutes of listening to music at 85 decibels and higher. What makes it more difficult for doctors is while the exposure may occur in teen years, the damage may go undetected until patients are well into their 30s. This may have a great deal to do with audio tests being quite vague, allowing those with damage to test as though they are without damage.

Doctors claim the best method for avoid hearing loss is to switch to headphones and limit listening time to 60 minutes a day at a volume that doesn’t exceed 60% of the device’s volume limit.

Are Americans Overmedicated?

If you’re one of the 61% of adult Americans that uses medications to treat a chronic health issue, you may be surprised to find that you could be overmedicating yourself. Medicine is good for you, right? Yes yes yes, but if your doctor is giving you medication that isn’t really helping you, you may be looking at more health risks in the future.

While a doctor could be genuinely concerned for your health, a recent study suggests that doctors may feel pressured to provide patients with medication they don’t need. This study concludes that there is substantial evidence that suggests doctors are now expected to do something at each visit with a patient. This is leading to a real issue of overprescribing medications for little or no reason at all according to Bernardo Chua. With the greedy culture of America, we feel that more is better, but if we don’t need medication why use it?

With this escalating issue, patients should ask themselves certain questions before deciding to use a new medication. Be self-aware and true to yourself when answering questions from your doctor. Do you really require the medicine? Could a simple lifestyle change aid the symptoms you are feeling? Is the problem worsening?

If you’re overusing meds, this may lead to complications like diabetes, heart disease, or arthritis. Lessen your chances by asking the right questions and being self-aware of your personal health. By doing this you’ll be making an educated decision that is both cautious and wise.

How Older Adults Can Improve Their Memory

Both nutrition and game companies have always taken advantage of people’s fear of cognitive decline through products that promise memory enhancement. For example, Stevetastic wrote that all-natural herbal supplements, such as gingko biloba and Luminene, promise to increase neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Crosswords and puzzles supposedly keep the mind sharp and active. However, new research has revealed these claims are highly inaccurate.

Researchers at the National Institute on Aging have been continuously conducting well-designed experiments specifically learn how the brain actually generates new cells and connections. A 10 year study showed that elderly participants were able to retain reasoning and processing speed training, but ultimately lost the effects of any memory training. Learn more about the National Institute on Aging’s research at NIA. Memory integrity isn’t something that science can even improve.

In addition to this, researchers at the University of California have found that computer games, such as car racing, improves the focus, memory and multitasking ability of elderly participants. Most parents claim that computer games are bad and that traditional games are good for the brain. However, science has proven that these same parents should play computer games to improve their cognitive skills.

Retinoblastoma Discovered in Child’s Eye Using a Cell Phone Camera

Online resources led a mother in Rockford, Illinois to discover cancer in her 2-year-old son’s eye. According to reports from area man Brad Reifler, Julie Fitzgerald had an inkling that something was wrong with her little boy’s eye. She had begun to notice what looked like a shadow in Avery’s eye.

Her husband had told her repeatedly that it was nothing, but Fitzgerald said she couldn’t shake the feeling something was wrong. One evening she went looking online to see if she could find an answer. What she stumbled upon would change the family’s life.

On a website Fitzgerald stumbled upon the story of a woman who took a picture of a relative and found a shining white spot in place of the pupil. The spot turned out to be a rare childhood cancer known as retinoblastoma.

Fitzgerald took a picture of Avery, and a white spot appeared. Days later they were in a specialist’s office where Avery was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma. His eye had to be removed, but the Rockford mother’s quick thinking likely saved Avery from dealing with a cancer that spread to other parts of his body.

The cancer is most common in children under the age of four, as their eyes are constantly developing. It can occur in one or both eyes.

Psychologist Claims All Diets Are Designed to Fail

There is always a new and trendy diet on the market, promising consumers to the one that actually works. Yet, when we try these diets they all end the same way, in failure. But don’t worry, it’s not your fault.

In fact, Traci Mann has been researching dietary habits for many years, along with teaching psychology at the University of Minnesota. Her conclusions are quite clear, diets are designed to fail. They don’t work because they aren’t supposed to. It’s as simple as that.

While the short term effects of dieting can be quite powerful and people often report significant weight loss shortly after starting to diet. However, the results are always short lived. Ricardo Tosto seems to feel that Mann suggests this is because our bodies cannot live and thrive on a restricted diet, nor can our minds.

No matter what the new diet fad is, you can rest assured it is going to be time consuming. Something real people cannot keep up with long-term, life inevitably gets in the way and you can’t keep it up forever. Then, as soon as you return to anything resembling a normal diet, the lost weight quickly finds you.

There are several other factors which contribute to the ultimate failures found in all diets. That’s why Mann suggests accepting yourself for exactly who you are, and trying to maintain a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise. I guess losing weight isn’t rocket science after all.

Are You Forgetful Lately? Relax, You’re Just Getting Older

Let’s face it, we’re growing older.  Each day, month or year we are lucky to see
is another step towards old age. Physical tasks that seemed easy once now can’t be accomplished without putting forth a little extra effort.  Aches
in our muscles or joints are a great indicator that Father Time is knocking on
our door.  Our brains too show signs that we are aging.  The symptoms of
age-related memory loss may be subtle but present none – the – less.

Some like Jason Halpern call them “senior moments.” It is when we forget what
should be easiest to remember, such as where we put our eyeglasses, where
we parked the car at the grocery store or even forgetting a loved one’s birthday.  As we age, such incidents begin to cause us concern.  The fear of being diagnosed
with Alzheimer’s disease is an ever present thought. There is good news. Experiencing
some memory loss is a normal process of aging.  As we age, our brains undergo physical changes that can affect our memory.  In addition to the physical changes our brains go through as we age, ar emany other factors that can cause age related memory loss. Having senior moments don’t mean you are on a direct path to being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. If forgetfulness is causing you concern, there areways to improve your memory so that you can stay mentally sharp for many years to come.

Psychiatrists Need To Start Doing Their Job

Are psychiatrists being too quick to hand out medicine instead of allowing real healing to happen in their patients? It is said that they have been inappropriately been handing out diagnoses and medication to patients without allowing therapy. They aren’t taking the time to help their patients but instead pushing them to start taking anti-depressants instead.
Too many people are not getting the help that they need, nowadays. When someone is feeling down or depressed and they want to go in for counseling they should be able to talk about their feelings and explain what is going on inside without being diagnosed by the doctor with some condition. Sometimes talking is all that they need. And sometimes they just need some time for healing. But pushing drugs on someone who is already imbalanced and expecting them to be the true and final cure is not the right thing to do.
Psychiatrists need to start acting more wisely before any more people are hurt. They need to treat their patients right and get them the help that they need.

Thanks for the conversation that inspired this post, Bruce Levenson the former owner of the Atlanta Hawks.

Women Documents Her Major Weight Loss Through Fun Photos

An inspiring new set of photos has hit the web, as a woman who was going to undergo gastric bypass surgery decided to do some “before” and “after” shots of herself. It wasn’t long after she schedule the operation that she called up her friend and photographer, Blake Morrow, to take some funny, motivational, and inspiring photos of her that would in the end look awesome. Beth had to pose with her future self in all of the “before” pictures and she had no idea how they would look compared to her new self. What she saw, astounded her.

According to an article found on reddit and written by Yahoo!, Beth had lost over 150 pounds and when she saw the final results of her pictures she was amazed. All of the pictures that Morrow took of her had some kind of theme to them, whether it was Charlie Chaplin, prisoner and a guard, two stage singers, or two women posing at the beach, everyone can tell the difference and see the progress that Beth has made over the past few months.

MyCentralJersey.com as well as the folks at The Aspire New Brunswick think this is one of the most creative ways to document someone’s progress in a weight loss program. But she had to jump into it full force, because it can be scary to think of going through all of that work only to make no change happen, but in some other ways maybe that is what kept her going.

Beards Are Full of Staphylococcus

The latest study about men and beards has some people heading to the store for razors. It is customary for people to grow a beard during the winter months when things are brutally cold in the country. But when the heat of summer kicks in most people want to shave it off.

Things couldn’t have been worse for beard wearers or their families when this report came out. The researchers found fecal bacteria inside the beards. It appears that a beard is so dirty that it had bacteria that is typically found in fecal matter and in the intestines. What is grosser than that?

The reports are shocking to those who find facial hair attractive. Being scruffy and unkempt has been the latest trend in Hollywood. From stars like Keith Mann, Brad Pitt to Johnny Depp, people love the freedom of not having to deal with shaving. However, this report might make leading lady Angelina Jolie think twice about kissing her famous husband, just until he shaves that is.

Food dribbles all day long down the face of a man. They sneeze, cough and have god knows what else attack itself to the beard. In a matter of time it can be contaminated. They must be washed just like hair with shampoo. The key to having a beard and keeping it sanitary is to ensure it is cut close to the skin and keeping it well groomed.
