The two friends would eventually get married and practice in the medical field, while living in various locations in the US and Canada.

Dr. Holterman’s wife, Ai-Xuan, was previously a native of South Vietnam. Her family had fled when North Vietnam captured Saigon, and she had not visited the country ever since. However, in 2007, She and Dr. Holterman took a trip to Ho Chi Minh City. Once there, they went to the children’s hospital, and were saddened by what they saw. The hospital had a severe lack of medical equipment and supplies. Consequently, some children were three to a bed, and conditions were unsanitary. Soon after that visit, the International Pediatric Specialist Alliance for the Children of Vietnam was founded (IPSAC-VN). The nonprofit organization funds and provides medical supplies to the hospitals of Vietnam, and does everything it can to provide healthcare to the rural areas of the country.
